Ethiopia, Sudan agree to enhance border trade and security

Jan 15, 2007 (ASSOSA, Ethiopia) — A joint border commission between Ethiopia and Sudan wrapped up this weekend its meeting in Sudan by the adoption of accords on border demarcation, security and development.

The 9th Conference of Ethio-Sudan Joint Border Development Commission held in Damazin town of Sudan was concluded on Sunday by passing various resolutions and signing agreements in the field of regional administration agriculture, health and investment.

The two sides agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in order to prevent movement of rebel groups through the joint border.

The conference resolved a number of points related to border demarcation and an accord was reached on the problem of farmers in the joint border between the two countries.

The two delegations also agreed to establish peace inquiry committee, expand health facilities and provide regular vaccination services to people living in boarder areas.

It also agreed to control contraband trade and establish banks in boarder areas by notifying their respective governments.

The agreements inked by delegations of the Blue Nile State of Sudan and Benishangul Gumuz State of Ethiopia.

The Governor of Blue Nile State, Abdelrahman Bomedian and Chief Administrator of the Ethiopian Benishangul-Gumuz State, Yaregal Aysheshum on the occasion said efforts are being exerted to strengthen the long standing relationship of the two countries.
