NYC Darfurians to ship donations to refugee camps in Chad

Jan 24, 2007 — (Elizabeth, New Jersey) The Darfur People Association of
New York, a group of refugees who have fled genocide in Darfur, Sudan, will send a shipment of clothing and school supplies to Darfurians
still living in refugee camps in Chad. They will send off the shipment
on Wednesday, January 24th from 1 to 3 p.m. from the port of Elizabeth
(at 849 Faremount Ave).
This will be Darfur People Association’s second shipment to the
refugee camps in Chad, where Darfurians displaced by the genocide in
their homeland live in a precarious situation and lack many of life’s
basic necessities. The organization plans to continue collecting
clothing and school supplies to be sent to the camps; anyone wishing
to help organize drives or make donations can contact Darfur People
Association at [email protected].
Since early 2003 genocide has been raging in Darfur, where Sudanese
government forces bomb villages and arm militias who carry out a
campaign of rape, arson and murder throughout the region. To date,
400,000 people have been killed and two million have fled their homes,
including the 200,000 currently living in refugee camps in Chad. The
Darfurian refugee community in Brooklyn is one of the largest in the
country, with nearly 300 members.
