Sudan’s CPA is the bible of marginalized people – Rebecca Garang

Feb 1, 2007 (JUBA) – The Minister of Roads and Transport in the Government of Southern Sudan has called on the Sudanese people to support the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), saying the CPA is the bible of the marginalized people in the country.

Rebecca_Garang-2.jpgMadam Rebecca Nyandeng called out for the people of Sudan to rally behind the CPA. “CPA is the Bible of the marginalized communities and people who need peace have to work for peace,” she said.

Rebecca since the death of the late John Garang reminds people both in the South and the North that Garang had knew there would be ups and downs. “But he would be happy to see that we are continuing with the struggle.” Also during the funerals of her husband in August 2005 she qualified CPA as Garang legacy to the Sudanese people.

“The signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in January 2005 was witnessed by the whole and now, time has come for delivering the services that the people of South Sudan fought for,” Rebecca said. She believes 2007 is the year of action: “It is the year that the government of South Sudan will deliver the services that the people of South Sudan expect to achieve,” she added.

Despite accusations implicating senior ministers in the GoSS of corruption including her, Madam Rebecca Garang encourages South Sudanese to have full confidence in the capacity of the GoSS to deliver at post-CPA period.

She also said 2007 was a year of learning, recognizing the government of South Sudan was not a “hand over” government but an “initiative government” which is still evolving and developing.

Recently, Juba passed a budget of 1.3 billion dollars for 2007. Rebecca stresses the budget will be used for resource development for South Sudan.

She further emphasized on the necessity for construction and establishment of public assets such as roads and bridges, as well as development of mass media – South Sudan’s television and radio – to improve communication and the image of the government of South Sudan as a tool for development.

DISAPPOINTED BY CORRUPTION ACCUSATIONS

Rebecca Garang has been disappointed by media allegations accusing her of being one of the corrupt ministers in the government of South Sudan.

Last December, pro- National congress Party newspapers published articles accusing of corruption Rebecca and some other officials in the government. She was the sole who preferred not to react to those false reports.

Madam Rebecca vowed that she will sue the media institutions for circulating allegations that she say indict her of corruption without any substantial evidence.

“I have been one of the ministers in the government of South Sudan named to be the most corrupt. Now, I am saying before you that corruption is something which I have never done before and which I will never do. I will sue these media institutions to proof before court (her guilt),” she said.
