Sudan names ex Darfur rebels in executive posts and parliament
Feb 4, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — In a new move towards the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement, the Sudanese president has named one former rebel as state minister and another one in a leading position in Darfur administration.
President Omar al-Bashir has issued a number of republican decrees in implementation of Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA). They included a republican decree appointing Abdelrahman Musa Abakar as State Minister at the Ministry of the Council of Ministers.
Another republican decree appointed Ibrahim Musa Madibo as Chairman of Darfur Rehabilitation and Resettlement Commission.
Both of them are leaders of two small Sudan Liberation Movement factions that joint the peace agreement by signing the Declaration of Commitment to the Darfur Peace Agreement on 8 June 2006.
A third decree appointed the following as members of the National Assembly – Alrayah Mahmoud, Ali Hussein Dousa, Traio Ahmed Mohamed Ali, Mohamed Ibrahim Abdalla, Engineer Mohamed Nureddin, Amir Bakhiet, Mohamed Adam Amin, Mohamed Abdalla Adam, Ismail Aghbash Abakar, Alsnosi Mohamed Alsnosi, Abdelrahim Hussein, Mariam Abdel-Rahman Tex.
This move indicates a shift in the policy of the Sudanese government which delayed the implementation of the DPA saying the signatories factions have to wait that holdout rebel groups join the deal.
