Sudan’s Lakes state governor urges unity under SPLM banner

Feb 7, 2007 (RUMBEK) — Lakes Sates Governor urged the local population to unite under the banner of the SPLM and to stop intertribal fighting. He further pledged that 2007 would be the year of development.

Lakes_Governor.jpgIn a meeting organized in Rumbek on Tuesday 6 February to launch the activities of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Lakes State for 2007, the Governor of Lakes State Daniel Awet Akot said no development without security and pacific coexistence. He appealed Lakes population to form one family.

“Let’s fight and resist sectionalism with all our might to become one solid family. I would love, at the end of my term, to leave behind just one tribe, one community – “Koc Aram weer” (Lakes Community) – Not Gok, Agar, Ciec, Jur-bel, Atuot or Aliab. There must be rebirth in our thinking, in ideas and popular attitudes. SPLM stands for that and I invited you to join me in order to champion this beautiful dream together.” Akot said.

He also vowed that 2007 is the year dedicated to developments in Lakes State. “We shall begin in all sectors and move on until improvement and real changes are not just seen but felt by you.”

While the SPLM Secretary General in the Lakes, Samuel Mathiang Keer, told the presence that the main purpose of SPLM activities plan for this year is to work together and to find out the best solution for the problems and difficulties in the region.

According to Keer, the movement wants to create a general public awareness on the CPA, census, elections, referendum and moral valves. Its action aims also to strengthen democratic practices though joint action with the other political parties and the civil society.

The SPLM intends also to promote the creation of syndicate body for Women, farmers, wounded heroes, trade union, professionals and workers.

The Lakes Secretary general said “apart from the mentioned activities, we have got an SPLM strategic plan for the whole country, which is also going to be implemented by each state.”
