KHARTOUM, Dec 26, 2003 — The leader of the Popular Congress Party, Dr Hasan al-Turabi, has appealed for establishment of political and religious freedom. He also called for peace that was based on justice in power and wealth sharing process, so as not to make a peace on paper, because the paper could [easily] be torn off.
Dr Turabi was addressing Christians during yesterday’s [25 December occasion] which comprised the Episcopal church in Khartoum Al-Bahri, the Anglican church group, the UAE-Based church of the two witnesses [last element as transliterated] and the Coptic church in Khartoum.
He said the relationship between Muslims and Christians is lovely and cordial. He called for an inter-religious dialogue, saying that religion does not have a border.
Dr Turabi called for unity among the country’s citizens regardless of religious or ethical background, so as to remove factors that cause tensions. He appealed for a united Africa similar to that of the EU.
The church leaders expressed their gratitude for Dr Turabi’s participation with them during the Christmas celebrations. They told him that they prayed for his release when he was in jail.
