Sudan reaffirms support to AU/UN efforts for peace in Darfur

Feb 17, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese president has reaffirmed his support to African Union and United Nations efforts to organize peace talks between Khartoum and Darfur holdout rebel groups.

During a meeting with the visiting envoys of the African Union and the United Nations, President al-Bashir declared the government support to dialogue with the rebel groups opposed to Darfur peace deal. He indicated his preference that this dialogue is to be inside Sudan or at a neutral place.

The Sudanese president has expressed Sudan hope that stability would prevail in Chad, pointing out that Sudan is keen to normalize its relations with Chad, referring to the positive impact of the good relations between the two country’s on the situation in Darfur.

This came during his meeting Saturday at the Guest House with the visiting envoy of the UN Secretary General for Peace in Sudan, Jan Eliasson, and the Envoy of the African Union, Salem Ahmed Salem,
