Parliament to meet 29 December to extend state of emergency

KHARTOUM, Dec 28, 2003 — Tomorrow, Monday [29 December], parliament will at its meeting seek to extend the state of emergency that was announced four years ago, by six more months, in response to a request from the president of the republic.

The chairman of the security and defence committee [in the National Assembly], Brig Muhammad Bakhit, said the defence, legislation and justice committees have decided to extend the state of emergency, given that the reasons which led to the imposition of the state of emergency still stood, and following discussions on the president’s request.
