Sudan hails military cooperation with Iran

Feb 28, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese Defence Minister, Lt-Gen Abdelrahim Mohamed Hussein, has expressed his appreciation at the way in which Sudan’s relations with Iran was developing at the bilateral level.

Hussein said the two countries were witnessing excellent cooperation in their defence relations, with the two countries exchanging expertise and scientific and technological know-how. All these, he added, stemmed from the bonds of faith and ideology and their mutual support for each other’s position at regional and international forums, besides joint coordination on various issues.

He went on to add that Sudan and Iran were being targeted internationally and faced similar challenges, especially from the USA, which he added was making attempts to reorganize the Middle East by weakening and fragmenting strong entities, in the interest of Israel, the USA strategic partner.

He said the USA was seeking to annul the concept of national sovereignty on the pretext of human rights and was using the UN Security Council to create new mini-states based on American concepts and culture, besides seeking to dominate the sources of energy, at the top of which was oil.

During a visit to Teheran last January Sudanese defence minister discussed weapons sales to and training for Khartoum’s military and security forces. “There is strong interest in acquiring Iranian missiles, RPGs, UAVs and other equipment”, an Iranian source said referring to rocket-propelled grenades and unmanned aerial vehicles.
