Syria supports Sudan’s efforts to realize peace in Darfur

March 20, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Visiting Syrian Vice President Farouk al-Shara stressed on Tuesday his country’s support for efforts exerted by the Sudanese government to realize peace and stability in the war-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur.

“Syria supports Sudan’s positions and its efforts to resolve the Darfur crisis,” al-Shara told reporters following a meeting with Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir.

“We hope that the Arab countries honor the commitments (of assisting Sudan) which they made during the Arab summit in Khartoum in March 2006,” the Syrian vice president added.

He reiterated the importance that the next Arab summit, which is to be held in the Saudi capital Riyadh at the end of this month, to achieve the maximum level of coordination and unity on the present issues which the Arab world is facing, especially the issues of Lebanon, the Palestinian territories and Iraq.

Praising the role played by Sudan as the current chairman of the Arab summit meeting, al-Shara said that the efforts exerted by the Sudanese president and his special envoy Mustafa Othman Ismail to deal with the Lebanese crisis as well as the Lebanese-Syrian file demonstrated Sudan’s concern over the Arab causes.

The Syrian vice president arrived in Khartoum earlier on Tuesday in his tour in the Arab world during which he had visited Algeria, Libya and Bahrain.
