More than 50 dead on Sudan roads

April 2, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Fifty-three people were killed in a gruesome pair of minibus accidents north of the Sudanese capital on Monday.

General Mohammed Imam of the traffic police told SUNA a driver lost control of his speeding car and slammed into a packed minibus, killing 31 people, including 10 women and five children, 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Khartoum, the state news agency SUNA reported.

In the other accident, at Mekabrab, 300 kilometers north of the capital, two minibuses collided, killing another 22 people. The number of people wounded in the accidents was not given.

Deaths from road accidents are common in Sudan because of speeding and a general disregard for traffic regulations.
