Kenyans held over murder in Southern Sudan

April 3, 2007 (NAIROBI) — Two Kenyans are among six company employees held over murder in Southern Sudan, the Nairobi based The Nation said.

Bernard Alumasa Mheri and James Munyao Mbithi along with their workmates George Forbes, Joseph Dut, Isaac Chol and Matur Maher are likely to be charged with the murder of Ukranian flight engineer Mykola Serebrenikov.

The six are employees of a Kenyan firm, Trax International Construction of Nairobi.

They claim in statements made to Mr Forbe’s Kenyan brother- in- law Orson Taylor, that the engineer committed suicide in their compound.

South Sudan authorities maintain the Ukranian was murdered but have yet to charge the suspects with the offence, nearly a month after his death. The engineer’s body was flown to Nairobi and taken to Lee Funeral Home where pathologists Jane Wasike and Andrew Kanyi Gachii examined it.

Dr Wasike said “the autopsy findings were in keeping with hanging” but “actual circumstances of death are not available.”

Dr Gachii, found that the “site and manner of ligature application consistent with self hanging” and that there was “no evidence of defence wounds suggestive of struggle.”

South Sudan authorities promised to address the issue.

Separately, Kenyan driver Dhahir Abdi Ali is reportedly held in Sudan and the family claims it was asked to provide Sh3.5 million or the man will be hanged.
