Army truck explodes in Sudan, no casualties – army

April 7, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — A large Sudanese army truck full of ammunition exploded in Khartoum on Saturday, but caused no casualties, an army spokesman said.

“The truck was shaken and this caused the explosion,” the spokesman said.

He did not say what might have caused the blast. Al Jazeera television quoted an unnamed security source as saying the ammunition exploded because of the hot weather.

“There are still blasts caused by the initial explosion and fire engines are not able to reach the area. But there are no casualties so far,” the spokesman told Reuters.

The pro-ruling National Congress Party Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) quoted the official armed forces spokesman, Mohamed Aghbash, as saying in a statement that the accident took place inside an ammunition site.

An ambulance was seen heading towards the site of the explosion. Security forces cordoned off the area. Explosions could be heard for about two hours after the indicent

A former Reuters correspondent said the explosion caused the international airport to be closed down.

Irwin Arieff said the steward on his KLM flight announced the safety of the aircraft could not be guaranteed because of shrapnel in the area.

The airport later reopened.

Army truck explodes in Sudan, no casualties – army
I read and re-read this article over fifty times now, and reading ‘there were no casualties’ is actually making me sick to the stomach and very angry.
Our friend and brother Jassim AlMagboul,Khartoum, Amaraat street 23, was sleeping in his room when ‘something’ hit him, one of these ammunition explosives, we are told. He was in intensive care all of the Saturday, and sadly passed away yesterday Sunday.
We are Sudanese and Muslims(Alhamdulilah) and accept that this is the will of Allah and that each individual has a day where his/her destined life ends; however, this kind of ‘accident’ is unnacceptable. Sudan and Khartoum(my home town)unfortunately has become extremely unsecure and the Sudanese nation do not feel safe. Who can we hold responsible for this? And why is there no clarifications as to what happend? No acknowledgment of ‘casualties’ or/ and apologies?

Jasim AlMagboul(May Allah Blass his soul)1980-2007, We love you and you are already missed
