Khartoum airport closed temporarily due to ammunition blast
April 8, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The international airport at the Sudanese capital of Khartoum was closed temporarily due to an ammunition depot explosion on Saturday afternoon, sources told Xinhua.
The international airport of Khartoum, which is not far away from the ammunition depot which exploded on Saturday afternoon, was closed at the moment for security reasons, the sources said.
Regular flights to and from the airport are expected to be affected by the closure.
The ammunition depot in the Sudanese capital exploded Saturday afternoon, a source from the Sudanese presidential office said, ruling out the possibility of intentional attacks.
Earlier reports said that it’s an army truck explosion.
The incident was likely caused by failures of electrical wire, the source added, without giving further details.
Columns of dense smoke could be seen in the air, witnesses said, adding that there were no report of casualties at the moment.
Security troops have condoned off the spot of the accident.
