Sudanese president thanks China for aid during hard times

KHARTOUM, Jan 5, 2004 (Xinhua) — Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed El-Bashir on Monday thanked China for its support and help during Sudan’s most difficult times.

The president expressed his thanks during a meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, saying Sudan would forever be in China’s debt for the contribution made by Chinese experts and engineering technologists to Sudan’s economic development.

He said bilateral and multilateral ties between Sudan and China have progressed well, noting Sudan supports China’s “One China” policy.

Bashir also welcomed the contribution of Chinese enterprises to Sudan’s reconstruction in the light of Sudan’s rapidly developing peace process.

Li said friendly relationships between the two countries have produced substantial development based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, bringing considerable benefits to both peoples.

He thanked Sudan for its support over the Taiwan issue and for help given fighting SARS.

The foreign minister also congratulated Sudan on achievements in safeguarding national sovereignty, developing the national economy and making headway in the domestic peace process.

He said China attaches great importance to mutually beneficial cooperation with Sudan in all fields, noting China will continue to support and encourage reputable Chinese enterprises operating in Sudan.

Prior to the meeting, Li Zhaoxing held talks with his counterpart Mustafa Othman Ismail, signing an economic and technological cooperation agreement between the two governments. He also met Minister of Energy and Mining Awadh Ahmed al-Gaz.

Li arrived here Sunday for a three-day official visit on the first leg of a four-nation tour.
