Leader of western Sudan rebels said injured, possibly killed
KHARTOUM, Jan 07, 2004 — In an unexpected development, well informed sources have told SMC [Sudanese Media Centre] that the Darfur [western Sudan] rebels’ field commander, Abdallah Abkar, has been seriously wounded.
The same sources said it was likely that Abkar had died from his wounds after being evacuated to the Fur [non-Arab ethnic group] region.
The sources said the Darfur rebels’ field commander was wounded yesterday during fighting in the area of Abu Qumbarah.
