South Sudan says canal Jonglei construction still under study
April 24, 2007 (JUBA) — Southern Sudan government minister has confirmed the signing of an agreement with Egypt on Canal Jonglei project. However, the minister minimized the importance of this deal saying it doesn’t mean resumption of the activities on the project.
In an interview with Sudan Radio Service, the GOSS Minister for Irrigation and Water Resources revealed that the MOU was signed in December last year. However, Minister Joseph Duer said that the MOU does not automatically mean that the work on the Jonglei Canal will resume.
Joseph Duer “The memorandum of understanding was basically on technical cooperation between the Government of Southern Sudan and Egypt. Actually, we are not dividing the activity or it is not resumption of the activity of Jonglei Canal. We know very well that Jonglei Canal is politically sensitive. What we mean is the review of study of the Jonglei Canal project.”
Duer said that the project has been stopped for almost 22 years and that the GOSS is planning to call for an international symposium to discuss the environmental impact of the project and consider whether or not it will resume.
The President of the Government of Southern Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit, accompanied by minister Joseph Duer Jakok,, met with, the Egyptian Minister for Water Resources and Irrigation Mahmoud Abu Zeid, on April 17. The Jonglei project was debated in that meeting.
