Sudanese Parliament urges support for water projects
25 April, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese lawmakers called for the support of water projects in the country. They requested that government should fund irrigation and electricity projects.
Members of the Sudanese Parliament on Wednesday have asked the ministry of finance to support the ministry of irrigation to help in carrying out water projects in states and in national projects, which includes drinking water projects, lifting up Rousers treasurer, Setit project in Atbera river, combining projects of White and Blue Nile, irrigation projects in the south and other projects.
They also called for the support of project, which is under-construction, besides of studies of electricity making dams in the Nile.
Parliament member, Abdelhamid Musa Kasha, said that the issue of water is a complicated issue and it needs collaborated efforts. He said that the water projects should be given priority in funding and should not be subjected to numbers.
Meanwhile, MP Al-Amin Dafallah called upon the ministry of finance to support the ministry of irrigation in carrying out water projects.
On the other hand, the Chairman of water and land committee in the parliament Faroq Mohamed Adem has called for the director of dams’ unity, Ussama Abdellah, to present statement to the parliament especially on the report of the ministry of irrigation, which was presented last Tuesday.
The report contained a number of points about the Dam of Merowi, a matter that opens questions about the relation of the ministry of irrigation and dams administration.
He added that the report did not mention the underground lake of Northern Darfur, which was discovered by the Egyptian scientist Faroq al-Baz.
The council has decided to refer the report to the concerned committees for further studies.
