SPLM succeeds to release police members in Kajbar incident
April 25, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — At least four citizens were injured in clashes between a police force amounted by 30 individuals and a number of affected people in the constructing area of the suggested Kajbar dam in the Northern state on Tuesday.
According to the secretary general of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the Northern state, Mohamed Ali, mediation by the SPLM has succeeded to release a number of the police members who were keeping hostage by the angry citizens of the area.
Deputy Chairman of the information office of the people’s committee of Kajbar dam, Mohamed Mustafa Mukhtar, said that the police blocked a peaceful march of the affected citizens that was heading to the location of the dam to carry out stay-in strike for 24 hours protesting over non-fulfilling of their demands.
He explained that Muzamil Abubakir, Imad Said Ataib, Abdelhakim Yusuf and Ahmad Omar were injured; some of them seriously.
He pointed out that the incidents took place southward of the dam in about a kilometer and half away from the dam.
He explained that the stay-in strike of citizens of more than 30 villages affected by the dam in Gidi area might continue until the fulfilment of the demands of the citizens that is withdrawing machines and stopping the work.
He added that a number of police members including a major and lieutenant were taken hostages by the citizens.
