Salva Kiir, Bashir calls for cementing political partnership

April 29, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese President and First Vice President urged in a joint meeting between the leadership of the two ruling parties to cement political partership based on a peace deal signed on January 2005.

Salva Kiir Mayrdit, stressed the importance of strengthening the partnership between the National Congress (NC) and the SPLM based on implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in order to remove any impediments facing the peace process and the democratic transformation.

This came when the First Vice President addressed the second meeting of the joint leadership committee between the parties to the Naivasha peace agreement at the Friendship Hall here Friday evening.

Kiir said whilst we discuss issues of peace and democratic transformation, we have to discuss the current situation in Darfur and the other problems in the country. He revealed the SPLM set up a committee to deal with the issue of Darfur, saying that the SPLM is looking forward to discuss possible solutions of many issues of the country.

He explained that the meeting of the joint leadership committee between the National Congress Party (NCP) and SPLM aims at cementing the partnership which is based on solving the current issues towards a sustainable peace and democracy for the welfare of the people of the Sudan.

President of the Republic and Chairman of the NCP Omer al-Bashir said the NCP and the SPLM shoulder the responsibility of ruling of Sudan during the interim period.

“The Comprehensive Peace agreement is our responsibility and to make it fruitful would be a success for all the people of the Sudan.” Said the President.

He explained that the two partners account for 80% of the federal and State organs, stressing importance of boosting cooperation to include more partners from the political parties.

President Al-Bashir explained that the two partners have gone too far in implementing the CPA.
