Sudanese president visits Egypt for talks on Darfur
May 5, 2007 (CAIRO) — Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir will visit Egypt on Monday May 7 for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on a number of issues of mutual concern, including the Darfur crisis.
During his two day visit, Sudanese al-Bashir will hold talks on bilateral relations, boosting joint cooperation and issues of mutual concern especially developments in the troubled region of Darfur.
The Sudanese ambassador in Egypt saidin a press statement Bashir’s visit to Egypt is part of consultations between the two countries. The talks will take up progress in Egyptian-Sudanese relations, he added.
A number of regional and international issues of mutual concern will also be discussed during the talks, he noted. He further said that there were continued consultations between the Egyptian and Sudanese leaderships.
Al-Bashir will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Lam Akol, Minister of Presidential Affairs Lt-Gen Bakri Hassan Salih and Security and Intelligence Chief Maj-Gen Salah Abdallah Gosh.
Under the auspices of the Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Sudanese president signed last week a reconciliation agreement with the Chadian President Idriss Deby. Egypt, which has conflictual ties with the Islamist regime since its inception, tries without great impact to play a regional role on the resolution of Darfur crisis.
