May 7, 2007 (RUMBEK) — Thousands of SPLM members have shown up at the Rumbek Freedom Square to celebrate the Southern Sudan SPLM sectors mobilization goal campaign in Rumbek.

The Rumbek Freedom Square was filled with children and groups performing different traditional dances. The crowd was holding SPLM flag even though other Southern Sudan political parties were present at the rally.

The rally was attended by the acting Governor and the Minister of Local Lakes Government State Awan Guol Riak, Advisory of Lakes State government, Director of General Mobilization Campaign for greater Bhar-El-Gazal Marko Chol Machiec, and some MPs from South Sudan parliament, Lakes State speaker of Legislative Assembly Alier Macienkok, including his honorable members of Lakes State Assembly and others political parties present in Rumbek.

In statement made by SPLM County secretary Mangar Matoch at the rally, he welcomed everyone to the campaign under its theme “New Sudan is our Goal and Final Destiny”. He added that “we are today marking the launching of SPLM campaign which is the desire to all the entire population of Lakes State as a whole of Sudan.”

Matoch underscored the need to transform the prevailing attitude among the people of tribal clashes and conflict by harmonizing coexistence among the communities in the Lakes State and beyond. He disclosed that the goal of the SPLM at this time to recruit new members up to three millions before the end of this year.

The SPLM is organizing its ranks to win the first general election following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Matoch warned that the SPLM is not willing to accommodate those forces who wish to undermine the CPA and urged its members to be serious about the campaign during the period of a difficult transition of the movement from a military movement to a political one. However he asserted that the SPLM is now “stronger than ever”.
