Sudan, Chad discuss security and military arrangements
May 14, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan and Chad have reiterated their commitment to implement the Riyadh agreement and other related agreements signed in Tripoli and Khartoum. The move comes after talks between the two countries on the implementation of security and military arrangements.
The Sudanese defense minister accompanied by Director of National Security and Intelligence service Salah Abdalla Gosh had conducted a short visit to Chad on Sunday during which they met the president of Chad, Idriss Deby, and discussed security and military situation between the two countries.
Saudi King Abullah bin Abdul Aziz sponsored a reconciliation agreement between Sudan and Chad on May 3 . The agreement aimed at calming tensions in the strife-torn Sudanese region of Darfur and the eastern area of the neighbouring country.
Following the meeting Abdelrahim said his meeting with Chadian officials came within the framework of implementing the Riyadh and Tripoli agreements so as to create a stable atmosphere along the border zone between the two countries, the Khartoum based al-Ray al-Aam reported.
He said the visit came within the context of supporting the Saudi, Libyan and Eritrean efforts as well as the efforts made by all friends to implement the agreements signed between Khartoum and N’djamena.
The ambassador of Sudan in N’djamena, Abdalla al-Sheikh, said the Sudanese government has formed a committee headed by the minister of defense and the director of national security and intelligence, which discussed the security and military situation between the two countries yesterday with the president of Chad Idriss Deby before returning to Khartoum on the same day.
Abdullah al-Sheikh further said that the committee delivered a message from President Omar al-Bashir to his counterpart Idriss Deby.
Al-Bashir asserted in his message Sudan’s seriousness and commitment to complete implementing the Riyadh agreement.
According to the ambassador, Chad also responded with a letter containing the same idea, expressing Chad’s concern about the security and safety of the Sudanese territories and its support to good-neighboring relations.
