Pakistan, Sudan ink security cooperation agreement

May 19, 2007 (ISLAMABAD) — Pakistan and Sudan have signed a security cooperation agreement between the two countries. During the visit the Sudanese delegation was briefed on effort to modernize the Pakistan’s police.

Bashir_Taha.jpgInterior ministers of Pakistan and Sudan have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday May 18 to enhance cooperation in security field and increasing cooperation in anti terrorism campaign, the Pakistani media reported.

The MoU was signed here on Friday by Pakistani Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao and his Sudanese counterpart professor Alzubeir Beshir Taha.

Under the MoU, Pakistan would impart training to Sudanese officers and would help in making computerized identity cards and driving licenses.

Earlier, The Sudanese delegation was briefed about steps taken to reshape the police forces of Pakistan. The Sudanese delegation was informed about police planning, standardization of administration, education and training, criminal identification services, research in critical areas of criminology, terrorism, organized crime.

The Pakistani officials explained efforts on e-policing in Pakistan, including Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), Police Records and Office Management Information System (PROMIS), Nationwide Integrated Trunk Radio System (NITRS), and Establishment of National Forensic Science Agency.

The delegation took keen interest in these projects and desired to seek help from National Police Bureau in upgrading the Sudanese police system. The delegation was also briefed about the state of the art DNA Laboratory of National Police Bureau established in April 2006. H.E. the Minister for Interior of Sudan and his delegation appreciated the National Police Bureau’s efforts in reshaping policing in Pakistan.

The Interior Minister while talking to his Sudanese counterpart said that cooperation would be enhanced not only in security but in other fields also. Aftab Ahmed Khan during the meeting accepted the invitation by Sudanese Foreign Minister to visit Sudan.

The Sudanese Interior Minster on the occasion has said that his country is interested to cooperate with Pakistan in all the fields and both the brotherly countries would not only enhance their cooperation to control transitional crimes but also on anti terrorism and in combating every kind of smuggling including human smuggling.
