General al-Burhan declares state of emergency, dissolve Sudan transition’s bodies

October 25, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan the commander in chief of the Sudanese army declared Monday a state of emergency in Sudan and dissolved the Sovereign Council and cabinet.

The coup d’états comes after reports about the arrest of Hamdok, senior government officials and leaders of the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) in the early hours of Monday.

In a short statement, al-Burhan stressed his “Full adherence and full commitment to the Constitutional Document and the Sudan Peace Agreement signed in Juba in October 2020”.

He further suspended several articles related to the Sovereign Council (articles 11, 12, 13, 14), the cabinet (15, 16) share of seats in the transitional legislative council of the political forces (24/3) the political agreement with the FFC, and the dissolution of the Transitional Military Council (72).

The military leader dissolved the Sovereign Council, the civilian-led cabinet, and terminated relieved the state governors as well as the ministerial undersecretaries.

He froze the Empowerment Removal Committee, adding they need to review its approach.

“We intend to form a revolutionary parliament that fulfils the aspirations of young people. We will work to hold general elections in July 2023, and we are keen to complete the requirement of the transition including the Constitutional and Electoral Commissions, and the Constitutional Court before the end of next November. We will form a government of competencies representing all the segments of (Sudanese) people,” he further said.

Sudanese took to the streets on Monday morning to protest the coup.de force as protesters established barricades and burn tires in Khartoum There are reports about similar protests in the other towns.

Also, joint forces from the army, the Rapid Support Forces are deployed in the main streets.

Hamdok Kidnapped

The office of the Prime Minister Hamdok issued a statement saying that he and his wife have been abducted by a military force and were taken to an unknown destination.

“The military leaders bear full responsibility for the safety of Prime Minister Dr Abdallah Hamdok and his family. Further, they bear the criminal, legal and political consequences of the unilateral decisions they have taken,” reads the statement.
