U.S Blinken, regional leaders discuss reinstatement of Sudan’s transitional gov’t
October 26, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – U.S. top diplomat Tuesday discussed the military takeover in Sudan with regional leaders and they called for the reinstatement of the transitional government in the country.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke about the military coup in Sudan with Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi who is the African Union Chair and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.
In two separate statements released after the telephone calls, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said that Tshisekedi and Blinken “agreed on the need for a return to a civilian-led transitional government in line with the 2019 Constitutional Declaration brokered by the African Union”.
Speaking about the call between the American and Saudi top diplomats Price said that they “condemned the October 25 military takeover in Sudan and its effect on the stability of Sudan and the region”.
Also, they discussed that the Sudanese parties have to adhere to the Constitutional Document governing the transition in Sudan.
” failure to do so put international support for Sudan at risk,” stressed the statement.
The United States mobilized international support for a democratic transition in Sudan after the collapse of the al-Bashir regime in April 2019.
The Friends of Sudan pressed the transitional military council to work with the prodemocracy Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and to form a civilian-led government in August 2019.
The United States and Germany paused economic assistance to Sudan after the military takeover. Washington said considering taking further measures in the near future.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also, called on Tuesday to reinstate the transitional government as it agreed in the Constitutional document of August 2019.
“A civilian-military partnership is critical. It needs to be reestablished at the level at which it was established. I think the Sudanese people have shown very clearly their intense desire for reform and democracy,” said Guterres.
