Sudan summons British ambassador over pro-democracy video
October 31, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan on Sunday summoned the British Ambassador to Khartoum to protest his statements against the military coup and support to the civilian-led government.
Sudan’s Acting Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Ali Elsadig met the UK Ambassador to Sudan Giles Lever this morning to express disappointment over recent statements, said the British embassy in a tweet on Sunday.
Lever on Friday released a video where he expressed his support to the civilian-led and called to release the government officials and political leaders detained after the military takeover on 25 October.
Asharq TV reporter in Khartoum said that the military council requested the British ambassador to leave Sudan after his video which also condemned the military coup.
However, the tweet of the UK embassy in Khartoum did not refer to his expulsion.
“Ambassador Lever reiterated the UK’s position and looks forward to continuing his efforts to support a more peaceful and democratic Sudan,” stressed the tweet.
On Sunday evening, Ambassador Khalid Farah Foreign Ministry Spokesman told the Sudan TV that had been summoned to protest some statements that are in flagrant violation of the diplomatic traditions.
Farah further stressed that his ministry did not expel the UK ambassador to sudan.
Sudan’s military rulers are under international pressure to restore the civilian-led transitional government. Also, mass protests took place in several states rejecting the coup de force.
