Sudan releases Islamists leaders from prison

October 31, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese authorities on Sunday released Ibrahim Gandour leader of the dissolved National Congress Party (NCP) and other Islamists linked to the former regime.

Ghandour posted a tweet on Sunday thanking God for his release. Also, his family confirmed his release.

The former foreign minister and NCP leader had been arrested on 30 June 2020 on suspicion of involvement in planning sabotage operations.

The Sudanese authorities have also released former East Darfur Governor Anas Omer, former information director for the General Intelligence Service, Mohamed Hamid Tabidi and GIS former spokesman  Maj Gen al-Shazly al-Madah.

In a related development, the Sudanese authorities released Mohamed Ali Al-Jazoli the leader of the jihadist group State of Law and Justice Party.

Following the release of the former Islamists leaders and officials, the Sudan TV, the only active official media, reported that Gen al-Burhan dismissed the acting Attorney General Mubarak Osman without further details.

It is not clear if there was a link between the release of Islamists leaders and his sack.

The attorney general was tasked with the investigations into the cases against these Islamists some of them were arrested by the suspended Empowerment Removal Committee.
