South Sudan, UNITAMS engage in mediation to end Sudanese crisis
October 31, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – South Sudan and UNITAMS officials held a series of talks in Khartoum on Sunday with the Sudanese parties seeking to settle the post-coup d’état political crisis in the country.
A South Sudanese delegation led by Presidential Adviser Tut Galtuak discussed with the head of the Sudanese army Abdel Fattah al-Burhan the rift with the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) and Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.
In a similar move, the head of the UN Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan Perthes Volker met with detained Hamdok to discuss ways to bridge the gaps between him and al-Burhan.
“Just met with Sudan’s PM Hamdok at his residence where he remains well but under house arrest, said Volker in a tweet after his meeting with Hamdok.
After the dissolution of the transitional government on 25 October, al-Burhan vowed o form a new civilian cabinet adding that Hamdok remains is the best candidate for the position of prime minister.
However, he said this government should not be nominated by the FFC groups but the prime minister should pick a minister from each of the 18 states to represent the whole country.
For his part, Hamdok says the parties must adhere to the transitional declaration and form a cabinet nominated by the December revolution forces and the peace signatory groups.
However, the prime minister stressed the need to release the arrested officials, cancel the state of emergency and end his detention before to engage consultations with the political forces.
Gatluak after a meeting with al-Burhan stated that he discussed all the outstanding issues with al-Burhan and he would meet the other stakeholders to reach a political solution to the contentious issues.
“Sudan does not tolerate any political, military or civil-military conflict, and all the parties must join the negotiating table to solve political problems,” stressed Gatluak who is also the chief mediator for Sudan peace process.
The SPLM-N Agar Sunday urged regional and international peace guarantors to secure the release of its Deputy Chairman Yasir Arman.
His continued detention may jeopardise the Juba Peace Agreement.
Al-Burhan calls for a broad-based government means to weaken the coalition of the FFC that signed the Transitional Constitution governing the transition in Sudan, say his detractors.
