SRF groups voice support to transition in Sudan, call to release detainees

November 7, 2021 (KHARTOUM) – The Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) Saturday voiced its support for the democratic transition in the country and called for the release of political detainees.

The SPLM-N led by Malik Agar, SLM Transitional Council led by Hadi Idriss and the GSLF of al-Tahir Hajar issued a statement on Saturday but extended to the Sudan Tribune on Sunday due to the internet restrictions imposed by the junta military.

In this statement, the Juba Peace Agreement signatory groups reiterated their commitment to the deal, called to respect the will of the Sudanese people and achieve the democratic transition paving the way for a civil state.

“The SRF renews its firm rejection of the coup and supports the will of the Sudanese people, the democratic transition and the building of a civil state,” reads the statement.

The three main groups of the alliance urge the unconditional release of all detainees in connection with the coup including Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and his political adviser Yasir Arman who is also a member of the SRF Leadership Council and its Deputy Secretary-General.

A South Sudanese delegation led by Tut Gatluak the chief mediator of the Juba peace process was in Khartoum this week. the visiting delegation called to their release and met Hamdok and Arman.

The SPLM-N had requested South Sudan and other regional and international guarantors to press Khartoum for the release of Arman and other government officials and political leaders.

The alliance of the armed groups rejected the use of excessive force against peaceful demonstrators and urged the coup leaders to lift the state of emergency. Also, they called for dialogue to end the ongoing crisis.

The Sudanese Professional Association (SPA) called for a two-day general strike on 7 and 8 November. The spearhead of the December Revolution declared their rejection of dialogue with the coup leaders and called to overthrow them.
