Arab League supports civilian-led transition in Sudan

November 7, 2021 (KHARTOUM)- A delegation from the Arab League States concluded a two-day visit to the Sudanese capital, Khartoum on Sunday with calls for a return to a civilian-led transition through peaceful dialogue in Sudan.

Ambassador Hossam Zaki, envoy of the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States led the delegation that met Lt. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan commander in chief of the Sudanese army and Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, according to a statement released by the regional body on Sunday.

On October 25, al-Burhan dissolved civilian rule and announced a state of emergency across the country. The move attracted protests amidst demands for an immediate return to civilian rule.

During the meeting with al-Burhan, Ambassador Zaki conveyed a verbal message from the Secretary-General of the Arab League States, Ahmed Abul-Gheit, in which he emphasized that the Arab League supports the transitional process in Sudan and the principles of resolving disputes through dialogue.

The delegation from the Arab League States also stressed the importance of continuing the partnership between the military and civil components until the end of that stage and bringing the country to safety through holding elections.

For his part, the head of the military council affirmed the commitment of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to support the democratic transition process and full openness to efforts to support and strengthen Sudanese dialogue, leading to achieving stability in the country and reaching elections in which the Sudanese people freely express their convictions in choosing their leaders.

The delegation also held a lengthy discussion with Sudan’s Prime Minister, Abdallah Hamdok on challenges facing the transitional process and the efforts being made to support constructive dialogue between the various components to help the country in the success of the transitional process.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Zaki stressed the Arab League’s principled position to support the existing Sudanese dialogue and reduce all forms of tension, allowing efforts to achieve Sudanese aspirations for the success of the transitional process based on respect for the constitutional documents and peace agreements signed over the past two years

He also expressed the Arab League member state’s full readiness to stand in support of all steps required by the Sudanese to achieve the transition process.

The envoy further said he has full confidence in the wisdom of the Sudanese leaders and that they will succeed in overcoming all the current challenges.
