France ‘open to discussion’ on new Darfur sanctions
May 29, 2007 (PARIS) — France said Tuesday it is “open to discussion” on possible new sanctions on Sudan, after the US announced new measures against Khartoum over the Darfur crisis.
“We are open to the discussions which are currently underway at the UN over possible new measures,” said foreign ministry spokesman Denis Simonneau.
“Some of our partners are pushing pretty hard for new sanctions. The discussions are ongoing, and we will examine whatever proposals are made about a possible toughening,” he said.
The US said that it is tightening economic sanctions on Sudan and will also seek a new UN Security Council resolution.
