Primary school teachers take the street to protest in Rumbek

June 11, 2007 (RUMBEK) –Rumbek Primary school teachers and students took the streets last week to protest against the Lakes State government.

The minister of Information and Communication in Lakes state Adak Mapuor said that teachers were protesting salary arrears.

Marik Nanga Marik, a member of the Lakes State Legislative Assembly, said in a press statement that Agur-Gum primary, Riak-dor primary school and others were involved in the protest.

The teachers clashed with the policemen who tried to prevent the teachers from reaching and the ministry of Education as well as ministry of Finance. Eyewitness reports indicate that students destroyed many computers, office furniture and office accessories.

Marik said that two students and one policeman were admitted to the Rumbek Regional hospital after sustaining injuries at the protests.

Mapuor said that the Lakes State Governor Lt. Gen Daniel Awet Akot intervened to break up the protest after promising the teachers to solve this problem. Akot flew to Khartoum to follow up and with President of Government of South Sudan and First Vice president of Sudan Silva Kiir.

Adak Costa Said that all primary school student were told by Lakes State government to write down their demands and explain why they were protesting against their own government while promising that teachers are going to be paid sooner.

    Primary school teachers take the street to protest in Rumbek
    How long does it take government to fulfil that demand made by the teachers union of Lakes State? Not just for the two primaries School which had been mentioned in your reported, but for the entire Lakes State.

    All teachers must be in the same category as far as the knowledge of all is concern.

    Significantly, however, the more we encourage the system of education, the more we have actually encouraging our primative mine people. People who are still keeping stupidety traditional mathod of refused their own childern for the rights of studies.
