Russian jailed 11 years for stabbing Sudanese student
June 13, 2007 (MOSCOW) — A Russian man was sentenced to 11 years in jail Wednesday for seriously wounding a Sudanese student after stabbing him in the southern city of Krasnodar, the Interfax news agency reported.
Sergey Ivanitsky was charged “with attempt on a life and theft,” the court ruled.
The Sudanese university student was gravely injured in the July attack and spent a month in hospital.
Two other Sudanese nationals were attacked in January last year in the nearby town of Voronej.
Racial attacks have been on the rise in Russia. A total of 539 racial attacks were reported last year — a 17 percent increase over 2005, the Sova centre monitoring such incidents said.
