Kiir directs mediator to discuss Sudan’s peace implementation in Khartoum

December 8, 2021 (JUBA) – South Sudanese President Salva Kiir instructed the Chief Mediator for peace in Sudan Tut Gatluak to travel to Khartoum for consultations on the implementation process with the parties in Khartoum.

The Sudanese government and several armed groups signed a peace agreement in October 2020 mediated by the South Sudanese leader Salva Kiir and his security adviser who is the chief mediator.

Speaking to the Sudan Tribune, the adviser said that President Kiir follows closely the political developments in Sudan and the ongoing peace implementation process which is part of the democratic transition.

“President Kiir asked me to prepare for a return to Sudan for follow-up talks with the Sudanese leaders,” Gatluak said.

He revealed that the follow-up discussion with the Sudanese leaders aim to accelerate the implementation matrix of the Juba Peace Agreement.

The President “needs peace and stability to prevail in Sudan and in the region,” Gatluak further stressed.

The peace signatories groups on Tuesday decided to form a task force to end the growing tribal fighting in the Darfur region.

The force is not part of the peace agreement but the failure to implement the security arrangements pushed the parties to take this decision.

In the Blue Nile State, the government and the SPLM-N Agar last September launched the implementation of the security arrangements but no tangible progress has been achieved.
