June 28, 2007 — The leadership of South Sudan United Democratic Alliance/South Sudan Defense Force is profoundly saddened by the tragic death of the Presidential Advisor, Dr. Majzoub Al-Khalifa. The people of Sudan, particularly South Sudanese, will dearly miss a man who persistently worked to bring peace to his country. Dr. Al-Khalifa’s contribution to bring peace and tranquility to his fatherland is not confined only to Darfur but also South Sudan.

It should be recalled that Dr. Al-Khalifa relentlessly toiled with former First Vice-president Zubeir Mohamed Salah to realize Khartoum and Fashoda Peace Agreements. He was instrumental during negotiations that led to the signing of Khartoum and Fashoda Accords. He was also vocal in supporting these agreements to be enshrined in the Sudan’s Constitution of 1997.

Despite the fact that the SPLM/A did not join the 1997 Peace Agreement, Dr. Majzoub Al-Khalifa joined other statesmen of the Sudan to broaden the search for peace in the country by keeping contacts with SPLM/A’s leadership. He was pivotal, along with Vice-president Ali Osman Taha, to resume negotiating with late John Garang until the conclusion of Naivasha Peace Agreement (NPA).

In addition to bringing peace to the people of South Sudan, Dr. Al-Khalifa’s remarkable negotiation talents came to be recognized during the talks with armed factions of Darfur which culminated into the signing of the Darfur Peace Agreement in Abuja in May 2006.

The untimely death of Dr. Majzoub Al-Khalifa will be deeply felt in South Sudan and Darfur where his vision for peace and tranquility is being enjoyed by millions of Sudanese who have been yearning for peace. The people of South Sudan in particular will enjoy peace dividends he brought about for centuries. The future generations of Sudan will always remember him as a man whose peaceful vision transformed the country from condition of instability to sustainable tranquility.

The people of South Sudan appeal to Allah to give him the same peace he brought to his country. His quest for peace in South Sudan and Darfur deserves unconditional forgiveness from almighty God. May his soul rest in peace.
