Abyei

Sudan peace partners, the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) exchanged views yesterday on the disputed oil-rich Abyei area. Therefore, the SPLM has stated that still there is a huge divergence in the position of the two parties over this issue.
According to a GOSS Minister of Presidential Affairs Luka Biong, the two parties are expected to hold a decisive meeting today.
At the same time reliable sources reported to Al-Sahafah that security and intelligence body proposed suggestions to the two parties to solve the crisis. Biong told Al-Sahafah that the NC made a reply yesterday to suggestions presented by the SPLM, which were studied by the later and made a fast and official reply on the same day but the minister was cautious on mentioning details of the exchanged replies between the two parties.
Luka Biong warned that failure of the parties to find a solution to the Abyei problem will have negative results on partnership, especially, in view of the upcoming population census and elections. He hoped the two parties would reach a solution on the conflict in the meeting of the executive committee that will take place today, pointing out that officials from GOSS had been engaged in Khartoum for a week, leaving behind them much responsibilities
