Sudan’s Popular Congress calls for large national coalition

July 17, 2007 (PARIS) — Sudan’s Islamist opposition party has called for a large national coalition to challenge the ruling party in 2009 elections and to implement a four year national programme.

The spokesperson, of the Popular Congress Party (PCP), al-Mahboob Abdelsalam, urged the Sudanese democratic political forces to establish a large front to realize political and economic stability in the country. He further said all the democratic forces should commit them selves to refrain from any political manoeuvring during this four year period and focus their effort for the implementation of the national programme.

Al-Mahboob, who was in Paris for talks with French officials and political forces, expressed doubts on the credibility of the ruling National Congress Party to run fair and transparent elections and to respect its outcome. He said it is vital for the NCP to remain in power because it is the only way to protect them selves from facing justice over the committed crimes.

According to him, the international community must monitor the 2009 general elections, because the NCP would loose his legitimacy if they try to defraud the poll. He further regretted that the world does not demonstrate a watchful attention to the democratic transition sin the country.

Regarding the resolution of Darfur crisis, he said that Abuja agreement should not be considered as untouchable, but issues like the position of the vice presidency or the formation of one regional authority in Darfur should be negotiable in the forthcoming talks.

Al Mahboob, who studied in the French universities, said he expressed during his meetings with the French officials and political the position of the PCP on the political situation in the country and particularly, Darfur crisis and CPA implementation.
