Rhode Island governor signs Sudan divestment bill

July 27, 2007 (PROVIDENCE) —Gov. Carcieri signed legislation requiring the divestment from companies that do business with Sudan.

Carcieri was joined at the signing by General Treasurer Frank Caprio and Representative Joseph Almeida, who sponsored the bill in the House of Representatives.

Providence last year became the first American city to divest from the west African country, and Rhode Island will now join 13 other states..
