Ethiopian premier and Sudan foreign minister discuss Darfur
July 28, 2007 (ADDIS ABABA) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi expressed his government’s commitment to contribute significantly to the efforts underway to bring about peace to the Darfur region in Sudan.
Meles made these remarks after having received a message from Sudanese President Omar Hassan Al-Bashir delivered by Sudanese Foreign Minister Dr. Lam Akol.
Meles said that Ethiopia as a member of Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) will enhance its role in the efforts to bring about durable peace in the Darfur region of Sudan.
The two sides also discussed security along the common borders which has witnessed inter-tribal clashes recently.
Akol told reporters that the two sides discussed discussions in the UN Security Council to send a peacekeeping force to Darfur.
