UNSC to adopt Darfur force resolution today
July 31, 2007 (UNITED NATIONS) — The UN Security Council is set to adopt today a resolution authorizing 26,000 peacekeeping troops to be deployed in Sudan’s troubled region.
Sudan Tribune has learnt that the Security Council will adopt on Tuesday a draft resolution introduced by Britain and France yesterday allowing the deployment of the hybrid African Union UN force under the authority of Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter.
“The situation in Darfur is the world’s biggest humanitarian disaster the world faces today,” UK Prime Minister Brown said on Tuesday at the UN. The resolution “will mandate a deployment of the world’s largest peacekeeping operation.”
Today vote will authorize about 19,555 troops to add to the AU force of 7000 troops currently in the region.
