Construction begins for new university in Rumbek

By Manyan Mayom

August 6, 2007 (RUMBEK) – The construction of a new university Rumbek will start next month. Rumbek university, the fourth in the southern Sudan, will start with six faculties.

The Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir had earlier issued out a decree to establish Rumbek University in Lakes State.

Last year the Sudanese president Omer al-Bashir pledged during a visit to Rumbek last year to construct a university in the capital of the Lakes State.

Al-Bashir said he hoped that the new university will bring happiness to Lakes State citizens and make them more involved in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The Sudanese leader upgraded Rumbek Senior Secondary school to a university.

Rumbek school was well known for having schooled dozens of well known Southern politicians.

The community leaders, elders and intellectuals of Lakes State have met to choose a construction site for the University.

Initially the University will be using the facilities at Rumbek Senior secondary school and later on University will be given it own area away from Rumbek Senior school.

The University is expected to have (6) six faculties which will be the first of its kind in Southern Sudan. The first faculties to be established will be medicine, Engineering, Veterinary Science, Agriculture, Education and the college of Social Sciences.

The secretary of the technical committee for establishment of the university, Mr. Mabor Dhuol Mabor told Sudan Tribune that about five billion pounds (5.Bn SPDs) have been allocated for the university by the Government of National Unity (GONU).

Dr. Peter Nyot Kok, minister for Higher Education, Sceincetic research and technology said that they would contact Al-Bashir to come back for laying the stone corner foundation for the University of Rumbek”.

Rumbek University will become the fourth Southern Sudan University after Juba University, Upper Nile University and Bahr-El-Gazal University in Southern Sudan.

However some students from the Rumbek Senior Secondary school expressed dissatisfaction for taking over the historical premises of Rumbek Senior secondary school.

One student talking to Sudan Tribune on condition of anyonomity said that this situation “is akin to Numery era when primary school premises are taken over by politically created secondary school and the primary pupils are sent under trees as classrooms”.

The CPA, signed in 2005, granted southern Sudan six years of self-rule, after which it will vote in a referendum on whether to remain part of Sudan or secede.

The war in the south erupted in 1983, when the rebels rose up against Khartoum to end Arab and Muslim domination and marginalization of the black, animist and Christian south.

The war claimed at least 1.5 million lives and displaced more than four million people.

How and Why can Rumbek Secoundary school be made in to University yet we have a huge large in southern Sudan. It is totally untrue for El bashir his broken way friends the enamies of peace to say such thing. If El bashir wanted to work for peace, then he can built other university in rumbek apart from the old school. Lets the school be alone for Bar El gazel people.

Bar el Gezal people, Please do not think the development is caming to you that is not development it’s only prapaganda of Jallaba. We will not accept unity even if they builds university in everybody mouth and hospital in every body noise. we will only accept unity when DENG Nhial, DR John Garang, Arok Thon Arok and the 3.4 million soldier who died for our right came back and works, talks and singing their song for us.
We can’t goes back to 1972 or the unity of what they think of it

Mrs Salva Kiir, the chairmenship is yours never thinks of unity if you think of unity, this is where by you will be like Lago, Abel Alier and Mading Garang the useless people in Southern Sudan, may their death be the freedom of southern Sudanfrom Jallaba.
