France affirms its support for Darfur peace process

August 8, 2007 (AL-FASHER) — The French Ambassador to Sudan, Christine Robichon, who is currently visiting the capital of North Darfur State, Al-Fasher, affirmed her country’s support to the peace process in Darfur, in the framework of the united Sudan.

The Ambassador Robbichon pointed out that the French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, is giving great concern to the situation in Darfur. She announced France’s readiness to contribute to development and reconstruction programmes, as well as realization reconciliation in Darfur.

The Governor of North Darfur, Osman Yousif Kibir, welcomed welcomed the visit of the French Ambassador to the state, the official SUNA reported.

He reviewed the efforts which are being exerted by the state government for boosting the stability, security and humanitarian work, affirming that his state is witnessing a big voluntary return of the displaced people to their home areas.

Last week, Sudanese foreign ministry summoned ambassador Robbichon to protest over “France’s failure” to press a key Darfur rebel leader to attend a U.N.-African Union mediated meeting of rebels in Tanzania aimed at forging a united position ahead of peace talks.

Abdelwahid al-Nur, explained that French authorities had did what they can do to convince him to participate in Arusha meeting. However he hailed France’s comprehension for his refusal.

Observers noticed that Khartoum tied to exploit Abdelwahid rejection of Arusha to retort to the French leading role with the United kingdom for the adoption of the resolution 1769 related to the deployment of 26000 peacekeepers in Darfur.
