Opposition communist urged to convince rebel leader to join Darfur process

August 11, 2007 (NYALA) — The Sudanese ruling party has urged the leader of the Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) to cinvince the leader of the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) to join Darfur peace process.

The ruling National Congress Party (NCP) South Darfur State branch has urged the opposition Sudanese Communist Party to interfere and persuade Abdelwahid Mohamed al-Nur, the chairman of the Darfur rebel SLM, to join the peace process led by the UN and the AU and aiming to resolve the Darfur problem.

The appeal was made at a dinner invitation by the governor of South Darfur State, Ali Mahmoud, on Wednesday August 8 on the occasion of the visit by the secretary-general of the Sudanese Communist Party, Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud, to Southern Darfur State which had started last Monday August 8.

The governor of South Darfur State said that he agrees with the majority of Nugud’s views on the upcoming troops in Darfur considering that it would neither be completely bad or good but, he added that they must prepare to counter the negative effects of the troops.

He further appealed to the political forces in Darfur for coordination between them to ensure that the crisis is resolved given that they would be the main beneficiaries if the issue is resolved.

For his part, Nugud said, that Darfur people should benefit from each others’ experiences to resolve the issue. He pointed out the necessity of exploiting the experience of MP and the human rights activist, Salih Mahmoud, in resolving Darfur’s problem saying that he might be able to use his experiences to contact Abdelwahid and persuade him to join the next elections.
