British Midland Airlines enters Ethiopian market

September 5, 2007 (ADDIS ABABA) — The British Midland Airlines ( BMI), the second largest airline operating at London’s Heathrow airport, said Wednesday it has now become the sole British carrier operating flights between Ethiopia and the United Kingdom.

In a statement, it said it has taken over Heathrow-based BA franchise airline British Mediterranean (BMD).

BMI said its flight network will now include 17 new destinations throughout Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.

The airline currently operates around 170 flights a day to and from its main Heathrow hub.

BMI is the second largest airline associated with Heathrow airport, one of the best connected airports in world. This airline holds 12 percent of all take off and landing slots of Heathrow and has won over 50 industry awards since 1990 for providing quality services.
