South Sudan urges Kenyan envoy to bolster peace deal
September 7, 2007 (NAIROBI) — Southern Sudan has appealed to Kenya’s special peace envoy to bolster the landmark peace agreement that ended two decades of civil war but whose increasing fragility could throw the vast region into a full-scale war.
South Sudanese President Salva Kiir said Moi, who was very instrumental in spearheading the peace talks which culminated into the signing of the CPA in Nairobi in January 2005,was the most competent person to resolve the issue.
The communique presented to ex-Kenyan leader said South Sudan’s patience with the north part had been stretched to the limit due to delays in implementation of the peace agreement.
The Kenyan envoy made a day-long peace mission in Juba on Thursday. The visit came after visiting UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon who was in the vast region on Tuesday said there were ” worrying signals” about the implementation of the north-south peace deal.
There were also concerns over delays in implementing a nationwide census, crucial to democratic elections promised in 2009.
