Sudanese police say SPLA participated in anti-illegal arms campaign

September 15, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Army was involved in the campaign conducted by the different security apparatus to find and confiscate unlicensed weapons in Khartoum on 11 September, a pro-ruling party daily reported today.

A high-ranking police source has disclosed to Akhir-Lahzah newspaper that the campaign was implemented by the Sudan Armed Forces and National Security and Intelligence Service, in collaboration with the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and Khartoum State Police.

The source explained that the SPLA participation in the campaign made the statements of the head of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Northern Sector, Yassir Arman, baseless and out of context.

Arman had denounced the police raid on the SPLM offices in Khartoum. He said his party had not been notified about the search of its office or allowed to oversee the operation.

While, Justice Minister Mohamed Ali al-Mardi explained that the law on arms, ammunition, and explosives for 1986, has clear documents that authorize punishment by death or imprisonment for a term of 10 years on anyone possessing unlicensed weapons, pointing to the urgent need for such strict measures by the police.

He added that the presence of unlicensed weapons affects investment opportunities, development projects, services and infrastructure, as stability is the basis of development.

He called for the need to continue such campaigns to clean up the capital and other state capitals of these weapons.

I don’t believe on this. If so then why did the assisstant to the president Nafi Ali Nafi apologised? or why not confirmed by SPLM? or how did SPLA participated without Yassir Araman, Salva kiir or SPLA leadership knowledge?. The questions are many but just to make short, why were the offices of NCP not targeted? is the campaign only for specific sects of the society? In my opinion this is just a media propaganda aimed at neutralizing the situation.
