Germany approves deployment of policemen to Darfur

September 19, 2007 (BERLIN) — The German Cabinet approved the deployment of up to 10 policemen to the Sudanese crisis region of Darfur, the Germen DDP news agency reported Wednesday.

The officials are to be deployed within the framework of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) monitoring mission. AMIS is to be turned into a new mission called United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur UNAMID) by the end of the year, which will be conducted by the AU and the United Nations together.

The German officials will then be sent to the new mission. Government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm stressed that the German policemen will be advisers and trainers in Sudan and will not have any executive powers.
