KAMPALA, Jan 28, 2004 — A GROUP of Sudanese scholars and law experts are here to deliberate on the prospects of a post-war constitution for the Sudan.
The group of over 30 people, was joined by its Ugandan counterparts in the field of Islamic and constitutional law for the three- day conference that started on Monday.
Meeting at Hotel Africana yesterday, the group was optimistic about the Sudan talks in Kenya and urged all sides to compromise for the sake of peace.
“The transition to democracy is a very important thing. Sudan should become a democratic nation. We are not going to undermine the agreements reached, even if they fail to satisfy us in the opposition,” Shan Man Doh, an opposition member, said.
He said although SPLA was a de facto authority, it would be good to sign an agreement with it for the sake of peace.
He urged other opposition groups in Northern Sudan to form an organised opposition, to urge the government to respect the outcomes of the peace talks.
