Finland offers civilian police for Darfur

September 27, 2007 (HELSINKI) — Finland is offering the United Nations 12 civilian police officers for a common crisis management operation of the United Nations and the African Union in the Darfur region of Sudan, the Finnish government said Thursday.

Three of the civilian police on offer are women.

The aims of the common crisis management operation of the United Nations and the African Union are to support the implementation of the Darfur peace agreement, and to protect aid workers and civilians in the area.

Finland currently has 93 civilian experts who are either taking part in civilian crisis management operations in Darfur, or who are slated for such a mission.
